§ 462.1501. Permanent Pet Identification Requirement.

  • Due to the number of missing and stray animals that enter Jacksonville shelters each year that cannot be reunited with their owners, proactive measures are necessary to address this situation.

    (a)

    Effective January 1, 2011, all dogs and cats four (4) months of age or older sold, transferred, exchanged, adopted, returned to their owner from a shelter, or given away shall be required to be implanted with a permanent identification device (RFID - microchip) that is registered to the legal owner of the animal.

    (b)

    The City of Jacksonville shall maintain a low cost option for the implantation of the permanent identification device (RFID - microchip) where such cost is equivalent to the actual cost of the device and its implantation.

    (c)

    Violation of this Section is subject to a fine of not less than the amount as designated in Chapter 462, Part 18.
