§ 220.207. Medallion to remain with vehicle for hire; replacement or transfer; surrender to Department; destruction of surrendered medallion.

Latest version.
  • (a)

The medallion supplied by the Department shall remain with and be affixed to the vehicle for hire so long as the vehicle is used as a vehicle for hire in the city or until surrendered to the Department as required by law. The number appearing on the medallion shall also be the serial number of the vehicle for hire to which it is affixed; the serial number shall be placed on the vehicle for hire as soon as the medallion is affixed thereto and before it is placed in service and the number so placed shall meet the requirements of Section 220.212(b)(3). Loss, destruction or defacing of the medallion shall be reported to the Department and the Department is authorized to supply a replacement medallion, if it is satisfied that the lost, destroyed or defaced medallion will not be used to avoid the requirements of this Chapter and upon surrender of a defaced medallion to it.

    (b)

Whenever a vehicle for hire is destroyed, lost, stolen or sold (but not as a vehicle for hire), or whenever a vehicle for hire is retired from service as required by Section 220.212(g), the owner may obtain a transfer of the permit to a replacement vehicle. The replacement vehicle must be purchased within 90 days of the destruction, loss or sale of the previous vehicle for hire and written notice, in a form approved by the Director, must be given to the Department within ten days after the purchase. If, upon inspection, the replacement vehicle is found to comply with the requirements of Section 220.212, the owner shall be entitled to transfer the permit and the medallion to the replacement vehicle, which shall be operated thereunder as if it were the original vehicle for hire.

    (c)

A medallion shall be transferred to a subsequent owner of the vehicle for hire if the transfer of the vehicle to new ownership is approved by the Director. If the transfer is not approved and the owner of the vehicle for hire does not continue to operate the vehicle, the medallion shall be surrendered to the Department and the vehicle removed from service.

    (d)

If a permit is suspended for more than ten days or is revoked, the medallion shall be surrendered to the Department, which shall, in the case of a suspension, return the medallion to the owner when the suspension ends or, in the case of a revocation, retain the medallion. A medallion that is surrendered to the Department shall not be reissued to another owner but shall (unless it is returned at the end of a period of suspension) be destroyed and a record made of the destruction.
